School pick-up, drop-off impacted by construction near two Edgewood schools

Some parents in Northern Kentucky are dealing with more this school year than just packing lunches and homework.

According to Edgewood resident TJ Day, it’s a nightmare and likely the worst just after work.

Right across the street from R.C. Hinsdale Elementary School, at the intersection of Dudley Road and Charter Oak Road, there is construction that drivers must deal with. All of the Kenton County School District’s classes started on Tuesday.

Day remarked, “I’m glad I don’t have to leave the house.”

Day works from home and said that for the last two months, he s seen cars backed up past his driveway.

Delivered to your inbox every weekday morning, these are the stories that everyone in NKY will be talking about.

“You’ll see cars backed up for 30 to 40 minutes just past my house down past Metcalf, from the corner of Dudley and Charter Oak,” Day added.

The Kenton County School District’s director of public information, Jess Dykes, said in a statement that the development has prompted the district to work closely with the City of Edgewood.

Dykes goes on to say that Hinsdale Elementary will continue to follow its parent drop-off and pick-up schedule. The traffic strategy has not changed as of yet, and all parties involved—including the families of our newest kindergarten students—have been informed that the same route has been used in the past.

“It’s not just traffic outside of Hinsdale,” Day added. Given that parents will also be picking up and dropping off pupils at St. Pius down the street, he is worried about the traffic pattern.

On Tuesday, the first day of classes at St. Pius, Jason Wolfe, a parent, claimed he didn’t see any change.

There wasn’t much of a change between this year and last. We just walk up and back because we live right on the street, but I didn’t see any traffic, Wolfe said.

Additionally, he stated that since St. Pius begins school earlier than Hinsdale, he is not worried about a traffic gridlock occurring.

Wolfe stated, “I think the earlier the better to avoid any congestion.”

The Diocese of Covington’s communications director, Laura Keener, stated in a statement that the principal of St. Pius reported that every student arrived at school on time.

“I wish all those who must come to Edgewood luck,” Day stated.
