There are numerous firehouses in the area where residents of NKY are welcome to recycle their spent lithium batteries.
Managed through the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub and partially funded by Rumpke, the program aims to help residents in both Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati safely dispose of lithium batteries.
Delivered to your inbox every weekday morning, these are the stories that everyone in NKY will be talking about.
According to a news statement from Jeff Snyder, senior vice president of recycling at Rumpke, lithium batteries are becoming more common. Additionally, many throw these batteries into their trash or recycling bin when they reach the end of their useful lives because they are unsure of what to do with them, which causes fires in our trucks and facilities.
According to a five-year research conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were more than 25,000 lithium-ion battery fires nationwide during that time. In the United States, commercial lithium battery fires cost $15.9 billion annually.
