NEW CARLISLE — According to St. Joseph County officials, the construction of the General Motors-Samsung SDI electric vehicle battery plant in New Carlisle is proceeding ahead of schedule.
Drivers passing by on SR 2 can see the buildings currently under construction on the 656-acre site at the Indiana Enterprise Center.
Construction of the 2.5 million square foot facility began in early 2024. When it is fully operational, the factory should employ about 1,700 people.
Bill Schalliol, St. Joseph County director of economic development says that the project is gaining significant momentum. Schalliol has expressed concerns that there are enough construction workers for both the GM project and the nearby Amazon Web Services data center project, which is also being built.
The county also expects the housing market to increase in the coming years due to the influx of workers in both GM and Amazon facilities.
According to a survey of local housing, St. Joseph County will need to add more than 28,000 units over the next 10 years to meet projected housing needs.
Construction of the GM-Samsung SDI building will be completed in 2026 and production will begin in 2027.
