Kentucky launches website to combat fraud and scams statewide

A new website called StopScams.ky.gov has been developed by the state of Kentucky as part of a statewide effort to combat fraud by providing more options for reporting, education, and public awareness.

According to a 2024 FBI report, Kentuckians lose more than $74 million annually to online scams. The website aims to reduce those losses by offering resources on how to identify and report scams, as well as guidance for victims on recovering lost funds. Visitors to the site can also sign up for scam alerts via email or text.

According to a news release, scams are cruel and wicked, and they rob Kentuckians of all ages of their hard-earned resources that could be used for retirement, food, rent, and other expenses. Even though we’ve made strides in combating scammers, a 2024 FBI analysis revealed that Kentuckians lose over $74 million annually to online scammers—something we will not stand for. We’re going to assist protect Kentuckians by giving them the resources they need to be safe through this new website, educational programs, and more.

The Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet is spearheading the effort in collaboration with the Better Business Bureau, the Kentucky chapter of the AARP, and other state agencies and groups.

Better tools and public participation are needed to combat the frequency of frauds, which are encouraged by the extensive use of digital technology and artificial intelligence, according to Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Ray Perry.

The Cabinet for Public Protection is thrilled to spearhead this effort. According to a news release from Perry, scams are becoming more prevalent and are targeting us from all sides as a result of the incorporation of technology into our daily lives and the development of artificial intelligence. Sharing information about recognized scams and educating individuals to recognize scams are the greatest ways to combat them.

AARP Kentucky, the Better Business Bureau, the Department of Financial Institutions, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet all expressed support for the program, emphasizing the value of interagency cooperation in thwarting fraudulent schemes.
