Cincinnati The absence of sidewalks on the route to a Mount Healthy elementary school has prompted a parent to voice their concerns.
The safety of youngsters walking to Mt. Healthy North Elementary is a concern for Amanda Friedrich, a parent of a student at Mt. Healthy City School.
On August 16, she expressed her worries on Facebook, feeling frustrated that the district was not taking any action.
“It’s scary there are no sidewalks, there’s no assurance that the kids know where to walk,” stated Friedrich.
There isn’t a designated walking route along the lengthy section of Struble Road.
For years, students have been forced to cross this crowded street without a sidewalk.
“The safety of the kids there is no way for them to safely walk home,” Friedrich stated.
WATCH: A few days prior to the start of classes, Friedrich contacted WCPO 9 News. She brought us here to demonstrate the issue.
“Look for other answers “They can’t even begin a walk here in a safe manner,” Friedrich stated.
We brought up her issues with the school district in Mount Healthy City.
We emailed the superintendent to inquire about the district’s student safety plan and whether any crossing guards will be present to control traffic in front of the school this year.
Superintendent Dr. Sarah Wilson said in a statement:
“Student safety is always our first priority, and Mount Healthy City Schools provides transportation in accordance with state law. We share and comprehend the problems of families. We are therefore dedicated to collaborating with our community to create the safest possible paths to school.”
Friedrich expressed her optimism that the district will find answers.
Who is in charge of installing sidewalks there, and what would it take to do so? Springfield Township includes the neighborhood in which the school is situated.
The township administrator told WCPO 9 News that the district hasn’t expressed worry about the lack of funding allocated for walkways in the area.
Friedrich is still hopeful that the district will come up with a strategy that would make it safer for youngsters to walk to school along this road.
Friedrich stated, “I just want something figured out,”
