Erlanger considers motorized scooter ordinance

Erlanger may soon take its first steps toward regulating motorized scooters, as Councilmember Jennifer Jasper-Lucas called for a discussion on proposed safety guidelines at the city s upcoming caucus meeting later this month.

Delivered to your inbox every weekday morning, these are the stories that everyone in NKY will be talking about.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, Jasper-Lucas stated that homeowners and business owners had voiced concerns over the last year regarding motorized scooter riders operating electronics while riding, riding without helmets, and driving on public roads.

According to Jasper-Lucas, the purpose of the legislation he is proposing regarding motorized scooters is to ensure that they are operated safely inside the municipal borders, not to prevent their use. Furthermore, I don’t necessarily want to issue tickets to those who aren’t using their scooters safely; instead, I want to establish certain standards by which to guide people who are using them.

The City of Edgewood’s legislation pertaining to motorized scooter use in the city, which was adopted in September, serves as an illustration of a similar regulation.According to the regulation, scooter riders must be at least 16 years old to operate a scooter on a road or bike lane, and they are not allowed to obstruct pedestrian pathways.

According to Jasper-Lucas, Erlanger’s present skateboard usage regulation could also need to be modified.

Later this month, on August 19, at 7 p.m., at 505 Commonwealth Avenue, the city will hold its next caucus meeting.
