Northern Kentucky Harvest has set August 9 for this year’s 25th edition of their annual backpack giveaway.

Previously called Backpacks and & Breakfast, the event, now dubbed the Backpack Bonanza, will take place in the parking lot of

St. Elizabeth Healthcare s Covington campus on James Simpson Jr. Way

from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Delivered to your inbox every weekday morning, these are the stories that everyone in NKY will be talking about.

According to a news statement from Northern Kentucky Harvest, which began the initiative in 2001, at least 1,250 backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies will be distributed this year. For every year the event has been held, that amounts to fifty bags. With this year’s backpacks, the project will have distributed over 19,000 in total.

A backpack can be given to any student in preschool through the twelfth grade, regardless of whether they are enrolled in public, private, or homeschooling. A first-come, first-served policy will govern their distribution. The event’s cuisine will be provided by Papa John’s.

In the same statement, Northern Kentucky Harvest Board President Paul Gottbrath noted, “It’s amazing how that increases their excitement about the new school year when you give a kid a new backpack.”

Parents’ photo identification, evidence of residency in Northern Kentucky, and, lastly, the youngsters’ Social Security or medical cards are required of families applying for backpacks.
