Stoffel, Gloria
After years of living in the shadows of Alzheimer’s, Gloria Stoffel, 93, passed away from pneumonia at Mason Health and Rehabilitation in Warsaw on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.
Gloria, a former Mermaid Festival beauty pageant competitor, was very particular about how she looked. She never left the house without wearing cosmetics, and she frequently kissed her children and grandchildren with lipstick. She loved playing bridge and euchre with pals, and her favorite course was South Shore. She was an ardent golfer. Long into her 80s, she was a member of a fitness club and enjoyed working out. She loved her family and sent crocheted hats as gifts to new arrivals. She attended most family get-togethers with her renowned grandmother cookies. The clusters of chocolate, peanuts, and marshmallows that would melt in your hands aren’t really called cookies, so they had to be consumed quickly (and typically in large quantities).
Gloria was born in New Castle on October 17, 1931, to Lula and Claude Matthew. She graduated with the Class of 1949 from North Webster High School. Cinda (Bart) Culver, Carla Singrey, Chris (Kathy) Singrey, Chad Singrey, Candice Hine, Curt Singrey, and Cathy (Jim) Twait were her seven children. She was a great-grandmother to seventeen great-grandchildren and a grandmother to fourteen grandchildren.
In her fifties, she became a Catholic and went to St. Martin de Porres in Syracuse. The caregivers at Mason provided careful care for Gloria as her body and mind failed, easing her final years on earth.
Daughters Carla Singrey and Candice Hine, grandson Wesley Cox, great-grandchildren Grace Cox and Wesley Teague Cox II, and husband Gene Stoffel all passed away before her.
